SGC Breakfast Briefing on 'Entrepreneurship and the Role of Universities'

About the Breakfast Briefing:

A university must not only be seen on the level of the international benchmark, but also part of society. We are not isolated.” opines Professor Herrmann, the longest-serving president of a German university. "The spirit that shapes a university changes over time, and we have seen this with the rise of young entrepreneurs.” He also opined that companies should be aware of this and should be keen to support the interaction between basic science research and engineering endeavours. A university needs to be both international in its outlook and anchored in its home environment.

About the Speaker:

Wolfgang A. Herrmann studied chemistry at Technische Universität München (TUM). Following his doctorate (1973) and postdoctoral teaching qualification (1978) at the University of Regensburg and professorships in Regensburg (1979) and Frankfurt (1982), he took over the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry at TUM in 1985. Since 1995, W. A. Herrmann has been President of TUM. He has been a leading light in the development of TUM’s forward-thinking entrepreneurial university strategy. He received numerous awards and honors and he is author of more than 800 publications and around 80 patents.
